Gambleの引用がどこから来たかは不明である。 スポーツブログ「Touching All Bases」によると、ギャンブルはかつて、メジャーリーグにおける人種差別の蔓延に関する質問に対して、”People don’t think it be like it is, but it do. “と答えたそうです。 スポーツブロガーのダグ・ルモワン氏によると、ギャンブル氏は、1975年の混沌としたニューヨーク・ヤンキースの経営について議論しているときに、この有名なフレーズを口にした。 また、「They don’t think it be like it is, but it do」とキャプションされたギャンブルのモノクロ写真（下図）は、2010年5月4日にBrownpau Tumblrブログに投稿されました。
意味
ギャングの引用が不明確なので、多くの人は彼の実際の意味について憶測している。 2010年5月9日、Yahoo AnswersのユーザーであるLeonが、この引用の意味を尋ねる質問を投稿し、それに対してユーザーのNickが、Gambleは他人が真実を否定して生きていることを非難しているのだと答えました。 2012年4月2日、Redditorのbunglejerryが/r/linguistics subredditに投稿し、ギャンブルの引用の背後にある意味を見極めようとした。
